Dupuytren's Contracture

Dupuytren's Contracture is a disabling hand disorder in which thick, scar-like tissue bands form within the palm and fingers. If it progresses, it can result in bending of the fingers into an abnormal position. This limits the straightening of the fingers and therefore interferes with normal hand function.

The surgical correction of this condition is a palmar fasciectomy. This operation involves opening up the skin of the palm and fingers and removing the diseased tissue. Following this, extensive hand therapy and splinting ensures that the fingers remain straight.

In certain situations where the disease is localized, an office procedure called a needle aponeurotomy can be performed under local anaesthesia.
